Why so much for a rescue dog?

Most dog adoption fees, whether from a breed rescue, or an animal shelter, range from $150.00 to $600.00. At Purebred Pals, our adoption donations range from $150 to $300 dollars. Why so much money? Who would pay that kind of money for a dog nobody seems to want anyway? People who want to make a difference in a pets life, people who disagree with the unethical treatment of commercially bred pets, people who want a specific breed that in some cases normally costs over a thousand dollars.

What our Adoption Donations Cover

  • We provide a full veterinary checkup, and innoculations for every pet that comes into our rescue. This means that every pet receives an innoculation against:

    • DHP-Parvo

    • Bordetella

    • Lyme

    • Leptospirosis

  • Ear infections and mites are painful for dogs, so our rescued pets receive Acarexx Otic Suspension, Otomax or another medicine.

  • Spay or neutering our rescued dogs

  • Auction fees for our Puppy Mill dogs

  • Emergency care or extended veterinary care for ill/injured pets

  • State certifications, business licenses, IRS fees

  • Business expenses for the rescue

    • Web pags

    • Phone

What our Adoption Donations Do Not Cover

  • We provide a temporary home, sometimes the first home that our fosters have ever had.

  • We provide food and grooming, nail trimming bathing.

  • We provide toys, beds, crates, leashes, collars and treats.

  • We provide training, some dogs require the payment of professional behavior classes. We also provide free training and education to the general public.

  • We provide transport to bring the dogs to us in rescue, to home visits, to veterinary appointments, to adoption events. Our volunteers take time away from their jobs, family and other commitments to make sure that our fostered pets are well cared for.

  • We rely soley on our volunteers and public donations. We do not receive one penny from the government. As a private rescue we do not receive resources from the state, no million dollar subsidies for us. When there isn't enough donated funds to operate the rescue, our board of directors take on the extra fees to keep us going.

Although the adoption donation is a way to subsidize some of the costs of caring for the numerous dogs we take in, the donation in NO WAY covers all of our costs. We often run at a deficit. We pay over $210 dollars to spay just one of our fosters, this fee does not include the office visit, innoculations, flea treatment, tests or incidentals. A routine checkup, ear clean, worming and innoculation can cost over $200 dollars.

NONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE PAID A SALARY

The donation also serves one greater function.  The adoption donation will put off anybody who is not willing to spend money on their animals. The suggested donation never comes close to the money that we have invested in a pet. If an applicant cannot afford a $300.00 adoption donation, then they are unlikely to be able to afford care for the pet when he/she falls ill or has an accident.  Basic emergency care for a non life threatening accident starts at $500 dollars and can go as high as several thousand dollars.

If someone won't donate to bring home a loving companion, then it is more than likely that they won't spend it when it is really needed either.  Companion animals do not have a voice of their own, they cannot complain if they are mistreated. Making sure that our fosters go to a good, loving and responsible home that will care for them for the rest of their life is our number one goal.
